While it gives a short history of chocolate, as well as a discussion of its moral effects, this book focuses on its medical uses. The author describes chocolate as "very nourishing," and says that it is particularly suited as a restorative food for the aged, the weak, "worn out persons" and, hilariously, "women who are out of order, or have the green sickness." Here, as elsewhere, chocolate is not recommended for young people or for "men of letters leading a sedentary lifestyle." Apparently, it also cures hemorrhoids (or piles). Surprisingly, this benefit has yet to be touted by modern manufacturers of chocolate! Coffee and tea are also discussed.
