Description

Introduction This article aims to elucidate how cognition and emotion can be united to understand the cognitive-emotional interaction occurring within the brain. The interactions between emotion and cognition could be defined at two levels namely, the diffuse or the non-specific level (Gray, Braver & Raichle, 2002). At this level the interactions are said to occur in a general manner, for instance pleasant mood states are hypothesised to be beneficial for mental activity while at the same time unpleasant states are shown to be detrimental to task performance. At the other level, the interactions are said to occur at a tighter level and imply greater complexity and connectivity at the neural level for handling the interaction. It is quite parsimonious to describe interactions in a diffuse manner until compelling evidence is obtained to the contrary. This paper strives to concentrate on the more common connections where evidence is available to support it.
